If you're constantly feeling tight, stiff, or like your body just doesn't move the way it used to, your first instinct may be to stretch more. But not all stretching is the same, and sometimes flexibility isn't the only thing your body needs.
Two options that can help are yoga and assisted stretching. While both can improve the way your body feels and moves, they work in different ways.
So, which one is right for you?
What Does Yoga Do for Tight Muscles?
Yoga combines movement, stretching, strength, balance, and breath. Rather than simply lengthening a tight muscle, a well-designed yoga practice can help you build strength and control within your range of motion.
This can be especially helpful when tightness keeps returning.
Sometimes a muscle feels tight because it has been overworked. Other times, your body may be compensating for weakness, limited mobility elsewhere, repetitive movement, or simply spending too much time in the same positions.
A personalized yoga practice allows us to look at the bigger picture.
Private yoga may be a great fit if you want to:
• Improve mobility while also building strength
• Move with greater control and body awareness
• Improve balance and stability
• Support an active lifestyle
• Develop a movement practice you can continue on your own
• Incorporate breath and relaxation into your routine
And no, you don't need to be flexible to start yoga. Improving how your body moves is part of the process.
How Is Assisted Stretching Different?
Assisted stretching is much more passive.
Instead of doing the stretch yourself, you're guided and supported through different positions while you relax. This allows us to work with specific areas of tightness without requiring you to actively hold the position.
For someone who feels chronically stiff or has trouble relaxing into stretches on their own, this can feel completely different from stretching at home.
Assisted stretching may be a good option if you want to:
• Address specific areas of tightness
• Improve flexibility and range of motion
• Support recovery from workouts or sports
• Reduce the feeling of stiffness from sitting or repetitive movement
• Relax while someone else guides the session
Sessions are tailored to your body, your comfort level, and how you're feeling that particular day.
So, Which Is Better for Tight Muscles?
It depends on why you're feeling tight and what you're hoping to accomplish.
If you want to become stronger and more mobile while actively learning how to move your body, private yoga may be the better starting point.
If you're looking for a more passive experience where you can relax while targeted areas of tightness are addressed, assisted stretching may be exactly what you're looking for.
And sometimes, the answer is both.
Yoga can help you develop strength, stability, mobility, and body awareness, while assisted stretching can give you dedicated time to slow down and work more specifically with areas that feel restricted.
They don't have to compete with one another. For some people, they complement each other beautifully.
What If You're Active but Still Feel Tight?
This is something I see often.
You can work out regularly, play tennis or pickleball, cycle, run, lift weights, or stay very active and still feel incredibly tight.
Being active doesn't automatically mean you're moving through your full range of motion. In fact, repeatedly doing the same activity can sometimes leave certain areas feeling overworked while others aren't getting the mobility or strength they need.
That's where adding intentional mobility and recovery work can make a noticeable difference in how you feel during everyday movement and the activities you love.
Your Session Should Fit Your Body
There isn't one stretch, yoga pose, or mobility routine that's right for everyone.
Your activity level, movement patterns, goals, previous injuries, areas of tightness, and even how you're feeling that day all matter.
That's one of the biggest benefits of working one-on-one.
